PFAS are called “forever chemicals” because they don’t easily break down in the human body or in the environment. They’re found in many items—including nonstick pans, cosmetics, and firefighting foam— and have been linked to liver damage, developmental issues, cancer, and more. The settlement will be paid over a 13-year period to any municipality to test or treat contamination.

14-year IRS veteran Gary Shapley, along with an unnamed IRS source, are the two whistleblowers. They claim that IRS investigators recommended a much harsher penalty, including attempted tax evasion and other felonies, than what Hunter Biden plead guilty to. Attorney General Merrick Garland has denied all allegations of preferential treatment.

Supporters say it will make up for lost advertising revenue of news companies, while opponents say that it will disproportionately hurt small, independent outlets, and result in poorer quality information on the platforms.
